FAQ - The Business of being a SIY Certified Teacher

About SIYLI hiring Certified Teachers

Are SIYLI approved teachers "hired" to work with groups on the "no compete list" regionally? Or are there "on staff" SILYI teachers used for those customers?

We do both, hire SIY Certified Teachers and have a few SIYLI teachers on staff. It's important to note though that we do not guarantee work for an SIY Certified Teacher and this should not be your primary intention for becoming certified. Our vision is that there are many hundreds of SIY Certified Teachers across the globe with the ability to find relevant audiences to teach to, so that we are all together having a larger impact in the world. We also envision that the amount of companies SIYLI is serving directly is very small in comparison to the amount of organizations being reached directly by Certified Teachers.

Do you ever approach certified trainers with programs marketed and sold by SIY, or is it always on them to generate the business?

The intention of Teacher Training is to certify individuals that can both sell and teach the program. We cannot guarantee work for teachers.

About Public Programs

Regarding “public programs”, are you saying that we cannot advertise in a town or location (via website, flyers, etc.) for an SIY training? Can SIYL be sold to individuals (through a website, for example) or only to companies and invite only public? / Please explain: can I organize a public SIY training myself locally and search participants with targeted advertisement? if not, why?

You can include in your website, Linkedin profile and other advertising channels that you are an SIY Certified Teacher that can teach the SIY program within companies and organizations. You may not host an open-enrollment program to be taught in English and sell individual tickets to participants.

We understand hosting an open-enrollment public program is a great way to get the word out there. We will gradually find ways for certified teachers to be able to do this. The reason we cannot commit to this yet is that SIYLI has been hosting open-enrollment programs for many years which has helped create brand-awareness and interest from companies across the globe which ultimately serves all current Certified Teachers. To do this, we have partnership contracts in place that we want to honor that include regional exclusivity. As these contracts evolve, we will update our policies and gear towards having Certified Teachers host public programs.

You may teach a non-English open enrollment program (subject to SIYLI date approval - e.g. we ensure that two programs are not being taught in the same city too close to each other) or a "by invitation" program (teaching SIY to a group of participants that you invite individually, rather than through a public announcement.) You may also contact SIYLI and explore co-hosting a public program in your geography.

About public events: now there is an upcoming SIY 2-day training in Zürich coming up. this seems to have public invitations. how does could I create such an event?

You may reach out to SIYLI to co-host a public program. We evaluate potential partners based on their ability to market the program locally and based on the global calendar of events (e.g. not have two programs hosted in the same city close to each other in dates)

How does SIYLI chose the locations of the 30 public programs each year?

Based on requests from partners and Certified Teachers. We are also trying to proactively reach out to regions we have less presence in, e.g. South America.

For "by-invitation", how to set the price and pay the 25% accordingly? What if not sufficient participants sign up? Do you agree beforehand with SIY the amount?

The 25% licensing fee is for SIY program sold in organizations. Non-english public programs and "by invitation" programs are new initiatives we are deploying to give Certified Teachers more opportunities. We are finalizing the licensing policy for these types of programs and it will be determined by July. Most probably it will be a fixed amount per participant.

If one was doing a Public Invitation Only session... I would be handling the collection of money, venue etc... Is there a price structure that one would charge per attendee?

Answered in above question. We will most probably share a minimum price per participant by July.

Invitation programs-assume could grow the audience via word of mouth?

Yes. It could also be that those you are inviting have a position in a company. By trying the program, they can become interested in bringing you into their organization.

Can I organize a public SIY training myself locally and search participants with targeted advertising? Can I advertise an SIY training in a town or location, via website, flyers, etc.? If not, why?

About Teaching at Universities

What category would universities fall into if you are teaching to students and staff?

If the agreement is with the university to teach x amount of SIY programs within the university to staff and students, and then staff/students enrol to the class, it's considered "teaching in an organization/company". What would not be possible is to have the University publicly announce the program and have people from outside the University apply and pay a ticket. That would be a "public program", and we have different policies governing these. (See question above about public programs).

For universities - was more thinking about students, not staff…

Same answer above applies.

How about facilitating the program in schools/universities? Do you do that? Any different cost approach?

Yes, we do. Same pricing guidelines. With the steep discount you are allowed to make, we are confident you could find a reasonable price point. If the pricing does not work, we are open to have a conversation and explore what does. You may also explore doing it pro-bono. We love the idea if SIY going into schools and universities, and are flexible to find a way for it to work.

About the non-compete client list

What happens if an instructor works with a company, and then that company shows up on the non-compete list?

We will honor that you were already working there. We would probably reach out to explore together if there are synergies and ways in which we can collaborate.

How does the “company list” work, once we are certified as teacher? Do we just “apply” with our list of network & potential clients right away? As said, companies will take time to respond to host the event, while using personal network is an asset brought into it. Any rules on this?

If a company you would like to contact is in the SIYLI's company list, contact us first. That's all we ask.

Would you be able to provide a list of your no-compete companies? I would like to check which of the bigger German companies are in it.

Due to confidentiality with our clients, we are not at liberty to do so until Certified. You may reach us at [email protected] and share the ones you are interested in pursuing, and we can share the percentage of overlap. Also, check our client list on our webpage.

About Selling SIY

Hi. Just to clarify, do you sell programs directly in the capacity individual consultant or through SIYLI (for administration purposes)?

You sell them as an individual consultant, not through SIYLI.

Can you share some successful models? // What does a successful teaching practice look like? Can you provide some examples of what successful business models are out there right now- revenue strong and growing and sustainable?

There is no one single formula for becoming a financially successful SIY Certified Teacher. There are, however, general principles that support you in becoming successful. These include:

  1. Becoming a masterful SIY teacher. In our experience this is driven primarily by practicing teaching SIY as often as possible. We’ve seen a direct relationship - the more you teach the more skillful you become, and this is reflected in the participants feedback scores. Another significant dimension to consider in becoming a masterful teacher is humility. We all have strengths and weakness, and part of becoming a masterful teacher is the ability to really hear feedback and for you to make meaningful efforts to address the feedback and grow as  a teacher. Which leads me to the final thought, and that is having the courage to really listen and set about improving your skills.
  2. Becoming a masterful salesperson. Again, in our experience, the most successful SIY certified teachers either have or build a network of customers. They often, but not always, market themselves to a specific audience and/or market themselves as solving a specific problem. In other words, they don’t remain general offering to help anyone with anything. This really helps to build momentum, as they become established and recognized as a valuable resources for that particular audience and/or helping people with that particular challenge. Another dimension of the successful salesperson is that they are always marketing and selling their services. It takes a lot of time and effort to build up a business. Please don’t think becoming certified means people will automatically knock at your door. This rarely, if ever, happens and is a sure way to set yourself up to be disappointed.

Do you have to be location specific? For instance I plan to sell the program to an international network and therefore travel to deliver it.

No, you do not have to be location specific. You may deliver in any part of the world.

About SIY advertising/branding on your site and with other of your programs

If you can’t advertise the program on your site, how do we go about marketing? :) Assuming you mean don’t advertise to individuals, but target companies and don’t specify pricing….

You may advertise on your website that you are an SIY Certified teacher that can teach the 2-day program within a company or organization.

The SIY program overlaps with my current business- can I brand SIY within my current business offering?

You can add to your website that you are an SIY Certified Teacher and can teach the 2-day SIY Program. In a sense, it's like adding a new product to your portfolio. There are branding guidelines we share with Certified Teachers so that they use the appropriate SIY Certified Teacher logo and colors, and describe the SIY Program accurately.

Can I club SIYLI program with my existing program?

To call it SIY, you must teach the exact same program in the 8-weeks, 4 half-days or 2-day format. If you will take an SIY exercise and include it in another workshop of yours, you must mention the source but cannot call the workshop SIY.

About Pricing

What are the minimums for the 1 day, 1/2 day and keynotes?

In the US, the list price for the 1 day is $15,000 USD, the ½ day is $10,000 USD, and Keynote is $7,500 USD. During 2017 we're conducting a price experiment and allowing certified teachers to discount each of these offering by up to 87.5%. The 1 day program in the US could be priced as low as $1,875 USD, the ½ day as low as $1,250 USD, and Keynote as low as $937.50 USD.

Hello, would participants need to charge for teaching a shorter sampling of the course (such as 1-2 hours) when teaching in-house? Thank you.

Yes. For example, we have some SIY Certified Teachers take the full 2 day SIY program and teach it in 2-hour increments over several weeks. The customer still has to pay for the program, regardless of the format in which it is delivered. Please note that select portions of the SIY program can not be taught on their own; the entire one-day or two-day SIY program has to be delivered.

If anyone can put a different price of the program from 3.570 to 30.000, I can imagine in the same city this can be a problem if we are more SIY teachers. We can be competitors between us…

Yes, it could happen. We experimented with setting a fixed minimum price, but realities across the world are quite different and it was experienced as SIYLI being too rigid. We think that the flexibility will provide teachers the opportunity to find the price-point that makes sense in each market and healthy competition is part of that dynamic.

About Licensing

Since SIY is a Non Profit, can you please explain how the franchising fee (the 25 %) is used internally … e.g. to do R&D or develop SYI program further? What is the long term outlook?

The licensing fees goes to support a small team that provides ongoing support to Certified Teachers (community events, webinars, new materials, answering questions, etc.), to product development (keeping the SIY program up to date) and to overall marketing efforts that help us all (e.g. website maintenance, brand awareness). As volume grows, we will revisit the percentage. We do not envision changing it in the next 3 years at least.

If I pay the Teacher training myself, but work for company xyz, is the $150 valid?

Yes.

About Teaching SIY

Do you have guidelines for how many participants should be in a 2-day SIY - for example, no more than 15 participants, etc.

We recommend a minimum of 15. A lot of the exercises in the program are dyad conversations and sharing with the larger group, so having at least 15 participants creates a rich shared experience. There's no set maximum, it depends on your own experience as a teacher. Teaching to a group between 15 and 50 requires a similar energy/gravitas. For groups larger than 50, it's best if you'd have previous experience teaching full days to large audiences before.

What would be the ideal size of a group, if you are teaching in the company you are working in?

Same applies

Keynotes - 2 ppl to deliver required? suggested pricing? what kind of materials does SIY provide for this?

You may deliver it on your own. The list price for the Keynote in the US is $7,500 USD. We provide a powerpoint presentation with some tips on how to deliver it.

Do you alter the program to tailor it to specific specific audiences (e.g. higher education)?

We do not have tailored programs based on audiences to share with Certified Teachers. When working with organizations you can adjust the opening to better connect the program to the business needs of that organization.

Do you already have the SIY material in other languages? or will we have to translate?

We currently have program material translated into Chinese (traditional and modern) German, Japanese, and French. Translations are done by Certified Teachers and then shared with the teacher community. SIYLI does not take responsibility for proofreading or quality control.

About Co-Teaching

How is the co-teacher paid?

That is for each Certified Teacher to decide. Paying a fixed amount per day is a standard practice in the training industry. In the US, for example, you might consider between US$1,200 and US$2,000 a day.

What's the best way to find a compatible co-teacher?

After this program you will have strong bonds with your cohort and know many people well that you can reach out to. Once Certified, we will introduce you to the network of all Certified Teachers. At SIYLI, we are also looking at ways in which technology can help teachers announce co-teaching opportunities and match availability.

What if there are not enough co-teachers in my region or the closest one isn’t available? Most teachers seem to based in the US.

If you make a thoughtful effort and cannot find an interested co-teacher, contact SIYLI and we'll work it out.

For half-day or one day program, does it also require to have a co-teach?

It's always recommended that you co-teach: you learn more and the participants have a richer experience. Having said that, you may teach one-days with a co-teacher and half-days on your own.

Practice teaching req'd to do w co-teacher?

Yes, if possible. We will manage exceptions if there aren't two in the same city. Some current Certified Teachers are interested given it's another opportunity to practice, and we will make introductions as needed.

Can i co-teach with another person from the teacher training?

Yes!!

About how many Certified Teachers and where

What was the average revenue of licensed teachers last year?

At this time SIYLI does not share this type of information

How many SIY teachers are there already in the Netherlands? Just to understand the co-teaching opportunities and the chance to be admitted.

The full list of certified teachers is here, and you can search be region: https://siyli.org/certified-teachers

How many teachers are you going to certify this year and the next years? // Have you identified the numbers of certified teachers you would like to have globally to ensure integrity of the program?

We are aiming at a minimum of 64 and a maximum of 96 this year. We expect to double that next year. How many we aim to certify in 2019 and 2020 will depend on how current Certified Teachers are doing in terms of quality and reach. We strive to find a balance between reach (have SIY taught in every corner of the globe), quality (check program eval and impact scores) and ensuring we are not undermining the ability of Certified Teachers to sell programs by having too many teachers in one city. We will manage applications based on a geographic distribution of teachers.

The list of teachers on the siyli website doesn’t indicate where they are located, can you please share a list?

The full list of certified teachers is here and indicates where each one currently resides: https://siyli.org/certified-teachers

Can you please also share the regional reach at the moment and where you would like to expand?

Prior questions includes where we have teachers today. In general, we'd like to expand our presence in locations where there are no teachers, with an eye towards Asia, South America, and Africa.

About Ensuring SIY Quality

Can you also please comment on quality of events - if you want to grow fast now. How do you ensure brand quality … Do you provide some kind of “personal development” within the teacher community to keep certified teachers great?

We ask teachers to have participants complete program evaluations forms that are then sent to SIYLI. We provide ongoing development through webinars and materials shared. There's a Facebook group for teachers to share experiences. We are planning on having one event per year for all Certified Teachers that would include further skill development.

About SIY Impact

Which are the results in the companies you have been training SIY program? Have we got numbers in performance?

You may check some of the results here: https://siyli.org/results

How do you measure the impact of the investment of SIYLI into the organizations, in terms of revenue ?

We show them the data we currently have, participant testimonials and some industry research: https://siyli.org/results

Have you received any feedback from events, clients, organizations that they would like to have more than 2 days of engagement to be “sustainable” and help people practice?

The 2-day program comes with a 28-day challenge that is available to you to provide to your participants. These are daily prompts and practices, and weekly buddy check-ins, to help participants sustain and integrate practice over the four weeks after they’ve attended SIY.

About SIY Compared to Other Mindfulness Programs

Mindfulness is very powerful tool. How is this different from MBSR or EI Teacher Training

The SIY Program teaches Mindfulness-based Emotional Intelligence. The practice of mindfulness is used to improve skills addressing various emotional intelligence competencies, including self-awareness and self-management, and improve other essential life skills including leadership, resilience, and alignment.

MSBR is a clinical intervention prescribed to help patients learn to calm their minds and bodies in order to help them cope with illness, pain, and stress

There are numerous trainings focused on emotional intelligence, each using their own methods and exercises to help students learn about and become more emotionally intelligent. SIYLI’s SIY Program is designed to teach the practice of mindfulness, and how the practice enhances emotional intelligence competencies and skills.

About the Teacher Training Program itself

Can you please elaborate more about the content of Teacher Training. And what are the takeaways from this program?

Here is our sample curriculum: https://siyli.org/uploads/gene...
If you have other questions please email us at [email protected]

With potentially a strong delegation of applicants from Europe - would you ever consider moving the TtT sessions to a European hub?

Yes, it's an idea we have been playing with. Maybe 2018 or 2019.

How much does it cost to obtain my certification?

The cost of the Teacher Training is 7,500 USD. This includes all program materials, two one-hour coaching calls, certification panel time, and venue. It also covers breakfast, lunch, coffee/tea, and snacks during Module 1, Session 1. This price excludes all travel and accommodations, and all other such expenses. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are not provided during Module 1, Session 2, though there are several lunch locations within walking distance from the venues. Please note that this price also does not include the cost of attending a 2-day SIY program, which will require separate registration and payment.

Does the certification cost include the 2-day SIY program? or is that in addition?

It is not included. If you attend a public program, you may check pricing here: https://siyli.org/programs/search-inside-yourself#find-a-training If you attend the two days prior to Teacher Training on Oct 2 and 3, the cost is $650.

What do I do if I have a conflict with the Teacher Training dates?

Sorry, you must attend both in-person sessions to qualify for certification. You may apply to the next Teacher Training Program.

How many people will you admit to the program?

A minimum of 64 and a maximum of 96.

How long does the teacher training take? The program takes place over eight months with the first in-person session in San Francisco starting in October.

  • Pre-work is sent by early September
  • In-person Session 1 - October 4 - 8, San Francisco
  • In-person Session 2 (you will attend one of these, but not both): February 14 - 16, Berkeley, CA or February 21 - 23, New York City
  • Certification Panel is in May, 2018 and again in August, 2018 if needed

Do the in-person sessions include written certification tests?

No. There is a written test to be submitted electronically between Session 1 and Session 2.

Do I understand correctly that the practice teaching works by actually teaching the 2 day course and videotape myself and send this to you?

You do not need to videotape the whole course. You can choose to videotape part of the program and choose a clip to send to your coach in advance of your two coaching sessions.  If you cannot record the program, you can videotape yourself at home doing a section (although sometimes it's harder to recreate a teaching feel with no audience)

For the safe audiences I am teaching to, does this mean I can offer it for free / no cost?

Yes

Can you give some glimpse of SIYLI Contents

Sorry, we don't quite understand the question. Would you like to reach us at [email protected]

Based on this info, I'd like to revise my teacher training application to better position me to be accepted into the program. Will we be able to modify the in-flight application?

You can re-submit your application. If you do, let [email protected] know so we delete the prior one.

Are Certified Teachers "hired" to work with groups on the "non-compete list" regionally? Or are there "on staff" SIYLI teachers used for those customers?

Do you ever approach certified trainers with programs marketed and sold by SIY, or is it always on them to generate business?

We do sometimes, as answered above. But the intention of Teacher Training is to certify individuals that can both sell and teach the program. We cannot guarantee work for teachers.
